This winter, the new Super-K strain is on the horizon, and the first doses of the vaccine are being administered to schoolchildren and pregnant women starting this Tuesday. Last winter, flu hit hard and early, thanks to a mutated version of the virus that made the rounds – a seasonal influenza known as subclade K or Super-K. The focus is now on schoolchildren, who are being prioritized for the jab, as they are quick to catch and spread the flu, putting at risk not just themselves but also their baby siblings and grandparents.
From October onwards, other eligible groups, including those aged 65 and over, can also receive a free NHS flu shot, with invites being sent out via phone or post. The vaccine from last season has been tweaked a bit, especially to better combat subclade K. But there’s still uncertainty about when the flu will hit this year, and whether it will be a severe season. Experts are turning their gaze towards southern hemisphere countries like Australia and New Zealand, whose flu season peaks around July or August. So far, these countries have had a relatively mild flu year, giving some hope for the UK.
Dr. Amanda Doyle from NHS England has urged caution, stating, “Last year, everyone was at risk of catching flu. It doesn’t matter how fit and healthy you are, or your age.” She reassured that the vaccine cannot give you the flu; instead, it helps your body learn how to fight the virus. Children aged two and older will receive the vaccine as a nasal spray, while adults will get an injection. Just one dose is sufficient for protection heading into the winter months.
High street pharmacies are stepping up, offering NHS flu vaccines, alongside GPs and schools. For those who don’t qualify for a free jab, the cost is about £10 to £20. Schoolchildren and pregnant women can access their free vaccines from September onwards. Starting in October, free vaccines will also be available for children two years and older who haven’t started school yet, those with certain long-term health conditions, individuals who are primary caregivers for older or disabled persons, or those receiving disability benefits.
But amidst all this, there’s a looming chaos in ADHD and autism care, and new HPV home-testing kits are rolling out for women in England who have missed cervical screenings. The NHS is clearly in a period of regrouping, grappling with multiple challenges while trying to ensure the health of the public.
