Tokyo’s streets could soon see a new kind of ambulance, one built not for humans but for humanoid robots. Japanese IT giant GMO Internet Group has unveiled a van specifically designed to carry engineers, repair equipment, replacement parts, and even a spare humanoid robot right to the site of a malfunction. This innovative approach marks the first of its kind in Japan, aimed squarely at humanoid robot maintenance. “The humanoid ‘ambulance’ carries the replacement humanoid to the site and replaces it with the damaged humanoid,” explained Shota Takizawa, an engineer at GMO Air, with a tone of pride that reflects the company’s groundbreaking work. If repairs can’t be completed on-site, the damaged bot can be taken back to a repair base while the replacement takes over.
GMO AIR developed this service after facing disruptions when damaged humanoids had to be sent away for repairs. “Learning from that experience, we came up with the idea of providing replacement humanoids,” said CEO Tomohiro Uchida, highlighting a practical solution to a pressing issue. Despite its ambulance-style markings and purple rooftop lights, this vehicle essentially serves as a mobile repair workshop. Inside, there’s room for robots, laptops, and all the maintenance gear you could think of. Right now, there’s only one vehicle stationed at GMO’s Tokyo headquarters, but they’re ready to ramp up production if the demand starts to climb. “When humanoids become more popular, this kind of service will be needed,” Takizawa mentioned, hinting at a future where humanoids are a common sight.
This launch comes at a time when competition over humanoid robots is heating up, especially between China and the United States. China has built a robust humanoid manufacturing industry, fueled by government investment and local supply chains, while US companies are making significant strides in AI and advanced robotics. McKinsey has estimated that the market for general-purpose robotics could skyrocket to around $370 billion by 2040. Meanwhile, Japan—once a titan in industrial robotics—is now looking to bolster its standing in the realm of AI-powered robotics. Back in June, the Japanese government set an ambitious target of introducing about 10 million robots by 2040, with plans to deploy them across 18 sectors, including healthcare, food services, and manufacturing.
