Rugby Star Sinfield Knighted as Authors Blackman and Donaldson Become Dames in King’s Birthday Honours
Rugby league star Kevin Sinfield has been knighted, while beloved children’s authors Malorie Blackman and Julia Donaldson have been elevated to dames in the King’s Birthday Honours list. Sinfield, a former England captain, is not just celebrated for his sporting achievements; he’s also recognized for his remarkable fundraising efforts, which have raised millions for charities focused on motor neurone disease (MND). This noble cause became deeply personal for him after his teammate Rob Burrow was diagnosed with the illness in 2019.
Let’s talk about the literary legends. Dame Julia and Dame Malorie are honored for their significant contributions to literature, with their most famous works—The Gruffalo and Noughts & Crosses—having been adapted for the screen. Their stories have captivated audiences far and wide, inspiring generations of young readers. Meanwhile, several of the Lionesses, the women’s football team that clinched victory at Euro 2025, were appointed MBEs, including Chloe Kelly, who scored the decisive penalty in the tournament. Charlotte Tilbury, a name synonymous with beauty, received a CBE for her contributions as well.
In a heartfelt message, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer praised the honorees, stating, “Across Britain, people are changing lives every day. This list recognizes their compassion, resilience and service to others.” He highlighted the spirit of kindness that permeates the nation, expressing gratitude on behalf of the country.
Sinfield, who holds the record for the most points scored in Super League history, began his fundraising journey after his friend and teammate Rob Burrow’s diagnosis. Since then, he has completed a series of marathons and endurance challenges, amassing over £11 million for MND charities. In a particularly poignant moment during a marathon in 2023, Sinfield pushed Burrow in a wheelchair along the course, carrying him across the finish line—an act that speaks volumes about their friendship. “I am deeply honoured to receive this award on behalf of the rugby and MND communities,” Sinfield expressed, adding that the sport has given him so much since his first game at the age of seven.
Lindsey Burrow, Rob’s widow, shared her thoughts on Sinfield’s honor, stating, “I know he is dedicated to supporting the MND community for however long it takes to find a cure, and that means so much to so many people to have a champion like Kevin in their corner.” Among the other Lionesses recognized are Michelle Agyemang, Jess Carter, and Alessia Russo, showcasing the incredible talent within the team.
Over in the world of sports, golfer Luke Donald and rugby union player Emily Scarratt were also honored with OBEs. Donald has led the European team to two consecutive Ryder Cup victories and is on the verge of making history if he wins again next year. Scarratt, a record points scorer for the Red Roses, recently retired after a stunning career that included two Women’s Rugby World Cup wins.
In the arts, Peter Lord and David Sproxton, the founders of Aardman Animations—famous for Wallace & Gromit and Chicken Run—have been knighted for their contributions to creative industries and charity. Meanwhile, actress Dame Helen Mirren and photojournalist Sir Don McCullin received the prestigious title of Companions of Honour, a recognition limited to just 65 individuals at any time, honoring their extensive contributions to arts and culture.
This year’s honours also pay tribute to those who have made significant community impacts. Deborah Lewis, who set up a support group for families affected by Covid-19, and Constance McCready, who did the same in Scotland, have both been appointed MBEs for their invaluable work.
And let’s not forget the contributions from the world of music. From the legendary Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath receiving an MBE for his service to music and charity, to Lisa Riley, who received an MBE for her dedication to drama and charity work, this list is a reminder of the diverse talents making a difference in our society.
Julia Donaldson, on the other hand, has been making waves with her latest project, announcing a new book inspired by a Scottish tale. This upcoming edition promises to introduce readers to Gruffalo Granny, adding to her already impressive portfolio of over 200 published works.
As the celebrations roll on, one can’t help but wonder what inspiring stories and contributions will emerge next. The ripple effect of these honours will surely propel many to think about how they can make a difference in their communities…
