Sainsbury’s has officially agreed to sell Argos for a whopping £120 million. The buyer, Swift Partners, is a newly formed company led by Richard Pennycook, the former boss of the Co-operative Group. This deal marks a significant shift for Argos, a brand that has struggled in recent years, often considered an underperformer in the retail market. With 667 Argos shops scattered across the UK—201 of which are standalone stores and 466 within Sainsbury’s—this sale reflects a larger strategy from Sainsbury’s to streamline its operations.

Sainsbury’s chief executive Simon Roberts reassured customers that it would be “business as usual” at Argos shops. He emphasized that Nectar points will continue to be offered across both Argos and Sainsbury’s, so no need to panic about loyalty rewards. Pennycook expressed his strong belief in the potential of Argos, hinting at the possibility of opening new standalone Argos shops and even considering a return of the print catalogue that many customers fondly remember.

Retail analyst Clive Black has often questioned whether Argos has been a good fit within Sainsbury’s portfolio. He described the struggle to sell Argos as “challenging and prolonged,” noting that the brand has not performed optimally from a financial perspective. He pointed out that Argos appears to have been “distracted” by the need to adapt to a digital-first approach, which has left it with a “bloody nose” in the competitive retail landscape. For example, in the first three months of this year, while group-wide sales rose by 3.1%, Argos’s sales specifically dipped by 0.5%.

Meanwhile, Bally Auluk, a national officer at Usdaw—a union representing Argos workers—acknowledged that this announcement brings about uncertainty but welcomed Swift’s commitment to the brand. The deal is expected to be finalized in February of next year, leaving both employees and customers anxious about what lies ahead for the iconic retail chain.

So, what does this mean for shoppers and employees alike? Will Argos manage to regain its footing under new ownership, or are we witnessing the slow fade of a once-popular retail giant? Stay tuned; the future of Argos is just beginning to unfold.
