The number of complaints lodged by households against water companies has surged by a staggering 84% over the past year, marking the highest increase in the two-decade history of the Consumer Council for Water (CCW). Many water customers in England and Wales are feeling the pinch, with steep bill increases leaving them confused and concerned about the state of their water services. This latest data reveals a growing dissatisfaction among the public, as they grapple with rising costs and demand better service for their money.

In 2024, the average bill for Thames Water customers shot up by 31%, a drastic hike that has left many residents reeling. However, this year’s increase was more moderate at 3.4%. Despite this, the frustration is palpable. Customers are fed up and “impatient to see the benefits” of their higher bills, which they hope will fund essential upgrades and improvements. The CCW noted that many people feel they have “not received the service they should expect,” highlighting the urgent need for water companies to address these issues head-on.

South West Water has acknowledged the situation, stating they are making strides to enhance customer experience by reducing repeat contacts and ensuring that problems are resolved swiftly. They emphasized the importance of clear communication to keep customers informed. Meanwhile, Ofwat has recently approved bill increases for 13 water companies to cope with the mounting pressures on infrastructure and environmental needs. Notably, Thames, Severn Trent Water, Southern Water, Wessex Water, and South East Water have already been allowed to raise their bills as part of this approval.

A spokesperson for Water UK urged that complaints should be managed promptly, minimizing the need for intervention from consumer bodies. However, the reality for many customers remains stark: bills are set to rise again, and questions loom about how much more they will have to pay for their water services.

The spike in complaints and the dissatisfaction with service standards are clear indicators that the water sector must step up its game. Customers are looking for more than just assurances; they want tangible improvements and accountability from their water providers. What’s next for the water companies? Will they be able to turn this tide of discontent into customer satisfaction? Only time will tell…
