Emerging AI models pose a growing threat to financial stability and economic growth, as warned by Andrew Bailey, the Chair of the Financial Stability Board (FSB) and Governor of the Bank of England. This alarming notice was sent on August 28 to G20 finance ministers and central bankers right before their upcoming meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, taking place on Monday and Tuesday.

Bailey emphasizes that the FSB will remain vigilant, especially as many jurisdictions lack adequate protocols to manage these new risks. His warning comes at a time when global instability is rampant, and market volatility is on the rise. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is pushing energy prices up, which in turn fuels inflation. Meanwhile, significant AI investments in the United States are adding more inflationary pressure to an already tense economic environment.

And that’s not all; unprecedented trade decisions by former US President Donald Trump are contributing to an increasingly unpredictable economic landscape. In this chaotic scenario, a new wave of sophisticated AI models is emerging, capable of spotting and exploiting digital weaknesses in complex systems like banking infrastructure and sensitive servers. We’re talking about potential catastrophic consequences for the economy here.

A prime example of this is Mythos, a model developed by Anthropic, showcasing advanced autonomous coding and cybersecurity abilities. This model was unveiled back in April 2026 but isn’t available for public use due to the significant risks it carries. Can you imagine that? Bailey also pointed out that “AI will not respect national borders.” This means that differences in legal frameworks, cyber capabilities, and resilience across jurisdictions could lead to consequences that extend far beyond where an incident starts. Essentially, we may be looking at an environment filled with a higher volume of vulnerabilities and a faster pace of patching…

The next G20 meeting is set to take place in Miami, Florida, on December 14-15. What will be discussed there? Will any measures be put in place to tackle these pressing issues? Only time will tell…
