In Spain, the trend of renting rooms in shared flats is on the rise, with 3.2% of Spaniards having rented or sought to rent a room, up from 2.8% just a year ago. This significant increase comes from the latest report, “Profile of People Who Share Housing,” conducted by Fotocasa Research, which analyzed data from the first half of 2026. The findings indicate that this option is quickly becoming a popular alternative in the rental market. María Matos, head of Research and spokesperson for Fotocasa, explains that the shift is more due to a lack of official options rather than personal preference.
The study reveals an interesting overlap between the two rental markets — but it seems to flow in one direction. Among those who have rented or sought a room, 34% have also looked for or rented an entire property in the past year. That’s right, one in three people are aiming for something bigger! On the flip side, only 11% of individuals who searched for or rented a whole flat have considered renting a room. It’s quite a contrast, isn’t it?
Meanwhile, the market for entire homes has remained relatively stable, with around 10% of the active population engaged in that segment. When we look at both markets together, the demand for rental housing now stands at about 12% of the population, which is nearly half a percentage point higher than in 2025. Fotocasa describes this increase as moderate. Matos points out that these numbers reflect a broader trend: the pressure on the rental market is spreading across all sectors.
More and more folks need to rent these days, and it seems they are drifting away from their original hopes of finding a perfect place. You can feel the squeeze in the market, right?
