Bodycam Footage of Henry Nowak’s Arrest Sparks Outrage and Calls for Police Accountability

Bodycam Footage

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has expressed serious concerns regarding police actions following the release of bodycam footage revealing the arrest of Henry Nowak, a young student tragically murdered. The footage shows Nowak, an 18-year-old Southampton university student, being handcuffed and pleading, “I can’t breathe,” as he lay in distress after being stabbed. The suspect, Vickrum Digwa, 23, was sentenced to a minimum of 21 years for the fatal attack, which he claimed was linked to his Sikh faith, as he carried a knife for religious reasons. However, the weapon used in the attack was significantly larger than what is typically allowed.

Nowak’s murder has sparked widespread unrest, with hundreds gathering in Southampton to protest, leading to clashes between demonstrators and riot police. The National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) is now under scrutiny, revisiting its anti-racism commitments that suggest differential treatment for ethnic minorities to ensure equitable outcomes. Critics, including Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, have labeled the arrest footage “awful,” citing “multiple failures” in police response, and drawing comparisons to the killing of George Floyd in the United States.

On Tuesday, Starmer described the bodycam footage as “really harrowing,” stating it raised critical questions about how accusations of racism influenced police decision-making. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently investigating the police’s actions and is expected to report within three months. Starmer has also indicated that a broader inquiry may not be off the table, emphasizing the need for clarity on how the situation was handled.

Tensions escalated further as protests led by far-right figure Tommy Robinson turned violent, with bins and bricks being thrown at police. Mahmood, the Home Secretary, condemned the unrest as “completely unacceptable” and urged against exploiting Nowak’s death for political gain. She emphasized that the Nowak family’s plea for unity should not be overshadowed by division or hatred.

Nowak’s father, Mark, expressed his heartbreak over the treatment of his son, highlighting that Henry pleaded for help multiple times, yet was met with disbelief. He stated, “Henry told officers that he could not breathe nine times,” contrasting this with the treatment Digwa received after the attack. The police force has since issued an apology for their handling of the situation, acknowledging the distress caused to the Nowak family.

As discussions surrounding the case continue, there are calls for a review of police training and protocols, particularly in high-stakes situations involving racial tensions. The culture within the police force is in the spotlight, with calls for reform to ensure that all individuals are treated equally under the law, regardless of their background.

The community remains on edge, and as the investigation unfolds, many are left wondering what changes may come and how policing practices will evolve in response to this tragic incident.
