In the past 48 hours, the UK has been rocked by a series of major fires that have left firefighting services under “incredible pressure.” A staggering eleven major fires have erupted, alongside 43 new wildfires since Friday, with areas like Stourbridge, Sandwell, Pershore, and Stoke-on-Trent in the West Midlands, as well as regions in Hampshire and South Wales, declaring major incidents. In Stourbridge alone, 38 homes have been either destroyed or severely damaged, leaving many residents unable to return to their properties.
The West Midlands Fire Service was alerted to a large grass fire near the Stourbridge Golf Club, in the Racecourse Lane area, just before 1:30 PM BST on Thursday. Over 100 firefighters were deployed to combat the flames that spread across an expansive 500 acres. As of Saturday, hotspots were still present, complicating the firefighting efforts. John Moore, a resident of Osmaston Road, was among those evacuated. He shared his distress, stating he visits the cordon four times a day seeking updates on his home. Fortunately, he reported that his house, which he shares with his 86-year-old wife, has not sustained damage, although he can only go back to retrieve necessary medication.
Marie Leese, another resident, likened the scene to the Blitz, describing it as a “blazing inferno,” with flames moving at a terrifying pace. She admitted to being too scared to sleep, as the neighboring house continues to “reignite,” leaving her on edge. Firefighters face an uphill battle due to the thick forestry in the area, which makes tackling these blazes exceptionally challenging. Clun Fire Station noted on social media how difficult it is to manage such intense fires under these conditions.
In a show of community support, the local council has set up an online fund for those affected by these devastating events. Meanwhile, around 300 residents in Stourbridge have been evacuated, with many still uncertain about when they’ll be able to return home. Adding to the chaos, a fire in the Totley Rail Tunnel between Totley, Sheffield, and Grindleford has led to the closure of all lines in the Peak District.
