In Oregon, the rules are pretty straightforward: assisted dying is available to terminally ill, mentally competent adults who are expected to pass away within six months. They need the approval of two doctors to get a prescription for a lethal dose of medication. Since 1997, a whopping 5,520 people in Oregon have received such prescriptions, leading to 3,691 deaths. And here’s a striking statistic from a 2025 report: 61% of patients who sought help to die had cancer, while 14% were grappling with neurological conditions like motor neurone disease, and 11% faced heart disease. It’s alarming to think that of the 400 patients who took the lethal medication last year, a staggering 89% cited the loss of autonomy as a significant concern. Others worried about losing control of bodily functions (47%) or being a burden to loved ones (43%)—and only a mere 4% were concerned about the financial implications of their treatment.

They warn about the so-called “slippery slope” leading to issues like “unbearable suffering” and “death tourism.” Meanwhile, Jersey’s legislation stands out from the rest of the British Isles. In both nations, patients have the choice to self-administer the lethal medication or have it administered by a doctor or nurse, typically through intravenous injection.
