Starmer Warns Burnham: Focus on Manchester, Not Leadership Challenge!
Sir Keir Starmer has cautioned Andy Burnham against launching an immediate challenge to his leadership if he wins the Makerfield by-election. Instead, he urged Burnham and the Labour Party to concentrate on the upcoming election for a new Greater Manchester mayor. If Burnham secures a victory in Makerfield this Thursday, he will have to resign as Manchester’s mayor, triggering a by-election expected to be held by August 6. There’s significant buzz around Burnham potentially challenging the prime minister for leadership if he makes it to Parliament.
Speaking from the G7 summit, the prime minister described a leadership contest as a “bad thing” for the country, emphasizing that he would resist any challenge. Starmer reinforced the importance of the potential mayoral election, stating that the party must “pull our sleeves up to ensure another Labour victory.” Interestingly, the prime minister hinted that he would extend a cabinet position to Burnham if he wins the by-election, expressing optimism about Burnham’s role in a Labour government.
As the political waters get murky, Labour MP Wes Streeting has signaled his readiness to initiate a leadership contest following the Makerfield by-election. Streeting, who stepped down as health secretary last month, mentioned that he postponed his leadership ambitions to allow Burnham a clear shot at participating. During an interview with BBC’s Newsnight, Streeting said he preferred the PM to make a decision on leadership rather than leaving it to him or Burnham to trigger a contest. “If not, we can’t continue with this uncertainty, and a contest will be necessary, and I would be ready for that.”
In response to Streeting’s potential challenge, Starmer remarked, “There is chatter in Westminster about potential developments in by-elections.” He added that the focus should remain on the Manchester mayoralty by-election, which would immediately follow if Burnham wins. “I hope he wins, but we then transition directly into the Manchester mayoralty by-election… so we all need to direct our attention there.”
The prime minister’s statements foreshadow the arguments he may present on Friday if Burnham emerges victorious in Makerfield. Some Labour MPs are concerned that Reform UK could clinch the Manchester mayoral by-election, despite Burnham’s previous overwhelming victory in 2024. Supporters of Burnham argue that the significance of the mayoralty only strengthens the case for him to ascend to prime minister sooner rather than later.
Reflecting on his experience as a leader, Starmer expressed that being prime minister is “the privilege of my life,” reminding himself daily of the honor it brings. “It’s a duty, and I’m here to serve; that’s why I entered politics. Not a day goes by without me acknowledging it’s a privilege.”
When questioned about whether ministers would need to resign to support one of the prime minister’s competitors in the event of a leadership contest, Starmer stated he would not “delve into hypotheticals.” His leadership faced further instability last week when John Healey and Al Carns resigned as defence secretary and defence minister amidst a funding dispute. On Tuesday, the chief of the defence staff cautioned that the UK’s armed forces would have to “dial back” training and operations without additional funding.
Starmer noted that the new Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis was “evaluating his priorities and capabilities,” adding that negotiations were still active. A complete list of candidates for the Makerfield by-election is available. The prime minister also mentioned that the UK is collaborating with other nations on a plan to safeguard vessels in critical waterways. As part of his agenda, the UK prime minister announced a ban for those under 16 to “grant children more freedom to grow up.” Andrea Egan told the BBC that Labour has failed to deliver, with her election showing that members were eager to make their voices heard. New social media regulations mean platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok will soon become inaccessible to millions of children.
