More than 100 organizations, including heavyweights like Amnesty International and Save the Children, are sounding the alarm. They’re calling on governments to ensure artificial intelligence is safe for children. The coalition, which is spearheaded by an initiative called childrencompanions, argues that governments need to focus on the business models that are fueling the problems associated with AI. Leanda Barrington-Leach, the executive director of 5Rights, emphasized that “this isn’t just about cleaning up the mess after harm has occurred.” They’re pushing for stricter measures, including banning design features that exploit children’s images, voices, and biometric data.
The group insists that no new laws are necessary to make a difference. Instead, what they see as crucial is the enforcement of existing commitments that governments have already made under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. As long as companies keep being rewarded for speed, engagement, and data extraction over safety, the risks remain high. Barrington-Leach pointed out that respecting children’s rights in the digital space is paramount.
