Thirty-seven people are dead, and nearly 400 have been evacuated following a devastating Russian drone strike on a weapons depot in Kyiv. The attack occurred in the Bucha district on Saturday, leaving the local community in shock and despair. The attack has left the depot completely destroyed, with visible cracks around the entire perimeter and around the windows, indicating a significant compromise in structural integrity. “I’m still kind of numb. I don’t know… once I come around a little tomorrow, I’ll probably have an even bigger breakdown,” said a local resident, capturing the emotional toll this tragedy has taken on the community.
The Ukrainian Prime Minister, Sergiy Koretsky, expressed his sorrow over the incident, highlighting the importance of learning from such “lessons” to prevent future tragedies. He lamented on Telegram about the need for stricter regulations regarding the placement and storage of explosive materials, pointing out that ammunition should never be stored near homes. Local resident Borys Daniyluk, 61, also voiced his concerns, questioning the decision-making of officials: “Why was this allowed? This used to be a place for food!”
In addition to the casualties from the drone strike, Tkachenko mentioned that a 14-year-old was killed in a separate attack in the Boryspil district. Meanwhile, Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported that a two-year-old child lost their life when a Russian drone crashed in the Obolonskyi area. The violence didn’t stop there; fresh strikes on Kyiv injured five people, including an 18-year-old girl, in the early hours of Saturday. Local officials have confirmed that five people have died across the country in recent attacks.
As the night unfolded, Ukrainian President Zelensky reported further strikes occurring in Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, and Zaporizhzhia. The Ukrainian army has claimed to have shot down 233 Russian drones amid escalating aerial attacks from both sides. The situation continues to escalate, with Ukraine intensifying its operations targeting Russian economic sites, notably striking locations associated with the retailer Wildberries earlier this week.
