Notably, the US Supreme Court recently ruled that many tariffs imposed globally under emergency powers were enacted illegally. Since then, the president has been scrambling for other legal avenues to push forward his trade policy agenda. Just last month, the White House proposed a series of duties on goods entering the US from various countries, highlighting concerns that these nations weren’t doing enough to combat forced labour practices.
On Thursday, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer made a statement under Trump’s directive. He cited Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which governs trade enforcement practices that burden or restrict American commerce. Earlier in the week, the Trump administration had invoked a different statute, Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, to impose a staggering 50% tariff on products coming from Canada. That’s right, 50%!
The Office of the US Trade Representative confirmed that these latest tariffs are being imposed on the top 60 US trade partners, covering an astounding 99.4% of US imports. The office mentioned that during his second term, Trump had made the adoption of a ban on imports made with forced labour a critical priority. They’ve made commitments to not only adopt but also effectively enforce these bans. This push has been bolstered by trading partners who are hastily moving to adopt prohibitions on forced labour imports, and the US is keen on ensuring these measures are enforced effectively.
