Scammers Target Instagram Users with Fake Copyright Claims and Ransoms

Instagram creators are feeling the heat as scammers exploit the platform with fake copyright claims, leading to account suspensions and significant financial losses. Reports are pouring in from users who’ve had their accounts taken down or frozen after these bogus claims were filed on the Meta-owned platform. The situation has become so dire that some users are resorting to paying ransoms to regain access to their own accounts. One user, boasting 1.5 million followers, revealed to the BBC that he forked out $50 (around £37) to a scammer just to get back his account. He said, “It’s a last resort. You feel like you’ve been extorted.”

Meta has acknowledged the frustration this situation causes, with a spokesperson stating, “Our systems are designed to protect people from this happening in the first place.” However, many creators are crying foul, claiming the platform fails to effectively identify blatantly fake claims. They argue that the appeals process is sluggish unless you cough up a monthly fee for verification, which costs £9.99. This monthly fee grants users round-the-clock support via live chat, but many feel it’s just another way for Meta to monetize their platform.

Take Olly, the creator of the Lost in Time History Instagram account, which showcases historical images to over 1.5 million followers. Olly, who preferred not to reveal his last name, insists he only posts images that are either in the public domain or for which he has permission. Yet, he’s still faced with dozens of “obviously fake” copyright claims. He expressed his frustration, saying, “They’ll demand a certain amount of money. It’s the worst part… having to pay the person who filed the claim.”

Other Instagram users are echoing similar sentiments. Abin Tom Sebastian, who runs the Morbid Kuriosity account, has shared his own struggles with fake claims. Meanwhile, Meta continues to assert that only legitimate copyright holders or their authorized representatives can file claims against users. They urge affected users to contact the rights holders directly. After the BBC reached out to Meta with evidence from Olly and others, the tech giant claimed to have implemented additional protections on their accounts to prevent future issues.

The BBC also spoke to three individuals who have been filing copyright strikes, despite not being the actual copyright holders themselves. All three appear to be based in India or nearby countries. They deny holding accounts for ransom, insisting their claims are legitimate. However, the BBC uncovered a message from one of these individuals requesting $900 (£668) to withdraw a strike, claiming it was a fee for their service. Two others denied making any money, with one stating they were simply directed to investigate certain accounts.

Legitimate agencies do exist that are paid to file copyright claims on behalf of clients. But Olly, who’s dealt with these scenarios before, mentioned that they are usually straightforward to manage. “You can easily tell the difference,” he said. The complexity of verifying genuine claims against the backdrop of billions of users on these platforms makes it a numbers game, as Guadamuz pointed out.

So what’s the takeaway? As these issues continue to unfold, users are left wondering what the future holds for their accounts and the integrity of the platform. Will Meta step up to protect its creators, or will this scam continue to thrive? We’re watching closely…

Meta Takes Action: New Curfews for Teen Instagram Users!

Meta is shaking things up! From now on, Instagram and Facebook are set to look and feel quite different for anyone under 18 years old. In a landmark

Meta is shaking things up! From now on, Instagram and Facebook are set to look and feel quite different for anyone under 18 years old. In a landmark move, Meta has agreed to a staggering nearly $18 billion settlement with 48 US states. This settlement not only aims to protect young users but also introduces some hard limits: a daily usage cap of just two hours, and a strict midnight-to-6am blackout period. What’s even more interesting is that “likes” will be hidden during the night hours.

Arturo Béjar, a former director of engineering at Meta, described this settlement as a “significant milestone.” But he also raised concerns about the agreement, stating that it allows Meta to define what constitutes harm. “It’s one thing to say, but it’s still as bad for you because of what’s getting delivered,” he pointed out. Furthermore, Béjar noted that while the age assurance measures are reasonably solid—with clear metrics and independent testing—there are still some gaps. Federal child privacy laws already require users to be at least 13 to hold an account, but Meta’s approach has been largely “don’t ask, don’t tell,” according to Béjar. He testified that the platform had “no goals, no metrics.”

The safety features that could potentially protect young users will now be switched on by default, including that all-important two-hour time limit. However, this limit can only be disabled with parental consent. Disappointingly, some experts have criticized the settlement for not addressing the recommendation algorithms that could connect kids to predators and lead them down risky paths. Yaël Eisenstat, who heads policy and impact at the Cybersafety Research Center, expressed her disappointment, stating that previous safety measures had proved ineffective.

Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers of the US District Court approved this settlement on Wednesday, which also extends to the District of Columbia and US territories. However, two states were left out of the agreement: New Mexico, which had a separate case against Meta, and Florida, whose attorney general deemed the settlement’s terms too lenient. So, what’s the bottom line here? Meta is under pressure to make changes, but is it enough to truly protect our kids?

Instagram’s AI Chatbot Breached: Hackers Gain Access to User Accounts!

Instagram has recently dealt with a major security breach where hackers managed to trick the platform’s AI support tool into granting access to other

Instagram has recently dealt with a major security breach where hackers managed to trick the platform’s AI support tool into granting access to other users’ accounts. This alarming incident unfolded when users shared screenshots and videos on social media, showcasing how the AI chatbot allowed unauthorized individuals to “hijack” accounts. Reports indicate that hackers manipulated their locations to deceive the AI into changing associated emails and passwords for various accounts.

Meta’s spokesperson, Andy Stone, confirmed that the issue has been resolved and that they are in the process of securing the affected accounts. In a statement made on X, he reassured users, emphasizing that the claims suggesting that the vulnerability was exploited to hack the accounts of world leaders were “totally false”. Tech news outlet 404media highlighted that this vulnerability coincided with a series of high-profile account takeovers, including a verified account belonging to Barack Obama during his presidency, which was reportedly used to share pro-Iran content before being recovered.

The exact number of compromised Instagram accounts remains unknown. However, notable victims include security researcher and former Meta employee Jane Manchun Wong. Wong, who once worked as a security engineer at Meta, expressed her frustration on X, stating that her Instagram password was changed “without my knowledge” and that she had encountered numerous attempts at password resets.

This incident raises significant concerns regarding the implications of increasingly powerful AI systems on user data and security. Videos circulating on social media appear to demonstrate the hacking process, one of which was shared by cybersecurity researcher Dark Web Informer on X. In this video, a hacker searches for a target username as part of the account recovery process. They utilized a virtual private network (VPN) service to masquerade as the legitimate account holder, sending a message to Instagram’s AI support assistant to link a new email to the account while requesting a verification code. Astonishingly, the bot complied, sending the code to the hacker’s email. Once verified, the hacker received an email with a link to change the password.

One user on X shared their frustrations about the lack of “human support” after their account was hacked. “We’re at the point where one AI stole it and another can’t fix it, zero humans in the loop anywhere,” they lamented. Companies across various sectors are increasingly replacing human customer service representatives with AI support tools, and tech giants like Meta are leading this charge. But as Marijus Briedis, chief technology officer at NordVPN, pointed out, when AI chatbots are given “too much authority and too little verification,” they can pose serious security risks. Briedis emphasized that account recovery—arguably one of the “most sensitive parts of any platform”—should prioritize security over convenience, as the person requesting access may not be the rightful owner.

The BBC has reached out to Meta to inquire whether human support representatives are available to assist users whose accounts have been compromised. The company has faced criticism for its lack of support for users dealing with hacked or mistakenly suspended accounts. An independent EU body that addresses disputes from social media users noted last week that Meta rarely responds when cases of wrongful account bans are escalated. The company has also recently made significant cuts to its workforce while investing billions in AI technology.

As concerns grow about the implications of AI on data security, West Yorkshire’s Alison Lowe highlighted the need for increased awareness among young people regarding these dangers.
