According to a new study by Pew Research Center, fear of job losses due to artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a significant concern worldwide, overshadowing any hope for new job creation. The research, which surveyed over 50,000 individuals from 37 countries between February and June 2026, shows that many people are increasingly worried about how AI will impact the job market. In countries like Australia, South Korea, and the United States, around 70% of adults believe that AI will lead to job losses over the next two decades.
Interestingly, the report reveals that people in wealthier countries express higher levels of anxiety regarding job losses compared to those in middle-income nations. In fact, data indicates that these wealthier nations are also more vocal about fears of AI exacerbating economic inequalities. Moira Fagan, a senior researcher at Pew, noted that individuals in affluent countries are more familiar with AI technologies, which correlates with their belief that AI will eliminate jobs. “People in wealthier countries are more likely to say they have heard or read a lot about AI,” she told Euronews Next.
Now, the survey highlights another striking aspect: younger adults aged 18 to 34 are particularly concerned about the potential for AI-related job loss, more so than older generations. Countries such as Canada, France, Singapore, and India fall into this category, reflecting a shared apprehension among youth regarding the future of employment in an age dominated by technology.
As the world grapples with the rapid integration of AI into daily life, a median of 37% of respondents across the surveyed countries reported being more worried than excited about AI’s advancements. Meanwhile, 41% expressed a blend of both concern and excitement. This ambivalence underscores the complex feelings surrounding AI’s role in our lives.
The timing of this survey’s release is particularly critical. Prominent figures in the AI industry, including Sam Altman and Elon Musk, are calling for a deceleration in AI development due to the associated risks. Ursula Von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, has also echoed this sentiment in her recent address to the European Parliament, emphasizing the need for collaborative safety efforts with partners like Canada and the UK.
