A woman who was assaulted by a man later convicted of two murders has expressed her deep disappointment with the police, stating her nightmare became “real life” when they allowed him to attack again. Speaking out publicly for the first time, she recalled how the attack “completely changed my life.” She emphasized that had the police acted differently, two women, Carmenza Valencia-Trujillo and Sheryl Wilkins, might still be alive today. “I feel absolutely devastated for all of those women that have been affected by him – and the families,” she shared, her voice trembling with emotion.
Remembering the day of her assault, she described feeling “hysterical” and crying when the police, preoccupied with other pressing issues, failed to prioritize her safety or look for Simon Levy, despite having a photo of him. “They could’ve looked for him that day, but they didn’t,” she lamented. It was a long journey for her to see justice. After the incident, she gave a statement to the police 15 days later and participated in an ID parade the following year. It took three years for Levy to finally face court, and in 2021, he was convicted for sexually assaulting her and another woman just a month prior.
Levy was sentenced to three years in prison but was released on license, even after assaulting a prison officer. Just earlier this year, she discovered through a Google search that Levy was going to trial for the murders of two women. “My heart dropped in my stomach when I read that. Had they charged him in 2017, I may not have even ever had to go to court. I may never have been assaulted, ever,” she said, emphasizing that the police need to reevaluate their procedures. “They could have prevented so many women from being hurt,” she insisted.
This tragic case highlights a troubling epidemic of violence against women, as the number of lives lost to male violence continues to rise. Last year, numerous women and girls were killed by men, prompting urgent calls for systemic change in how these cases are handled by authorities.
