Tom, a 20-year-old from Brighton, found himself on the edge of disaster after accidentally taking eight times the recommended dose of a counterfeit weight loss drug, retatrutide. He claims he nearly ended up in the hospital due to the severe side effects, including relentless diarrhea and nausea that lasted for 72 hours. This experience sheds light on a disturbing trend in the weight loss industry, where excitement around new drugs is leading people to turn to dangerous alternatives.

The buzz around retatrutide, a drug still undergoing clinical trials and not yet approved for human use anywhere, has triggered a deluge of illicit, counterfeit versions flooding the black market. Experts have noted that this is one of the first times they’ve seen such widespread availability of copycat drugs still in the testing phase. Vials claiming to be “reta” are being marketed aggressively online, with many people believing they are injecting a safe medication. “The world has gone mad,” says one concerned expert, highlighting the risks of individuals using unregulated substances they know little about.

Despite some positive outcomes in early clinical trials, retatrutide is far from guaranteed to make it to market. In fact, only about 50% of drugs in Phase III testing are eventually approved by the FDA. The high failure rate is often due to drugs not performing as well in larger, more diverse populations or revealing unforeseen safety concerns. The counterfeit versions currently on the market could be completely different from the real thing. This was underscored when officials discovered over 2,000 unlicensed retatrutide pens during a raid on an illegal weight loss drug factory in Northampton last year.

Eli Lilly, the company behind retatrutide, has issued stern warnings on its website about these counterfeit products. Yet, the allure of quick weight loss is prompting many to take the risk. “Patients have no idea how much they are actually taking or what they’ve been injected with,” says endocrinologist Professor Donal O’Shea. People sourcing these fake versions are effectively acting as lab rats without any medical oversight, exposing themselves to significant health risks.

One user, who had previously experienced adverse effects, decided to try the counterfeit drug again. After nine months of cycling the fake version, he claimed his cravings for sugar and junk food had vanished. On the other hand, Lisa King, another user, shared that she had lost about 3 kilograms (6 lbs) a week while taking a fake version of retatrutide and working out. “I’m not sure if it’s due to reta, but I have a lot more energy,” she remarked, admitting that if she noticed any side effects, she would stop using it immediately.

The situation has drawn the ire of regulators and health professionals alike. Authorities are taking action against companies, influencers, and wellness clinics that manufacture and promote these counterfeit medications. Eli Lilly has reported more than 14,000 websites, advertisements, and social media posts that are illegally marketing the drug. A spokesperson for the company emphasized the need to disrupt the illegal importation and distribution of such products.

This frenzy around weight loss drugs raises critical questions about the future of dieting and our relationship with food. As the industry grapples with the implications of these counterfeit drugs, many are left wondering what the next steps will be. Will the obsession with quick fixes continue to overshadow the importance of safe, regulated medications?
