Holidaymakers returning from Mexico are facing a warning over a nasty parasite called cyclospora that’s causing explosive diarrhoea. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported a sharp rise in cases, with 67 infections recorded since April, and many of these cases linked to travelers who have recently visited Mexico. It’s a serious situation, especially as the US is grappling with its own outbreak that has affected over 18,000 people across 45 states.

Experts emphasize that this particular parasite does not naturally occur in the UK, which means there’s no risk of spreading it from person to person. Between April 30 and July 15, 2026, there have been 30 reported cases in England, 27 in Scotland, and 10 in Wales, according to the UKHSA. Among the 52 cases for which travel history is available, a staggering 48 reported having traveled to Mexico, with many saying they stayed in popular tourist hotspots like the stunning Riviera Maya or the bustling coastal city of Cancún.

Now, what’s alarming here is the nature of the symptoms. Some unfortunate souls describe their experience as having to rush to the bathroom up to 20 times a day! Yes, you heard that right. The diarrhoea can be so intense and watery that it feels almost as if there’s a balloon in your stomach. If you’ve got plans to head to Mexico, experts are urging you to take precautions—drink bottled water, eat thoroughly cooked meals, and steer clear of fresh uncooked fruits and salads.

People are being advised to avoid certain risky foods, like those fresh berries and herbs, and yes, even unpeeled fruits. If you start to notice symptoms after your return—like watery diarrhoea, loss of appetite, stomach cramps, or other flu-like signs—don’t wait. Seek medical attention and make sure to inform your healthcare provider about your travel history.

As the investigations continue and monitoring remains ongoing, travelers are left wondering: will this outbreak affect their vacation plans? Or what else might come from this situation? The health officials are on alert, but the story isn’t over yet…
