The hantavirus outbreak that affected passengers aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius is officially over, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that the last person who had been exposed to the virus completed their quarantine, tested negative, and returned home safely. It’s been a relief since no new cases have been reported since May 25, leading the WHO to declare the outbreak over.
This outbreak, which initially caused concern, was connected to a bird-watching trip that took travelers through Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. During their journey, the passengers visited areas where a specific species of rat, known to carry hantavirus, was present. It’s important to note that while this particular outbreak has ended, hantaviruses, including the Andes virus, remain a public health risk in South America and other endemic regions.
Hantavirus spreads primarily through rodents, with the virus particles being inhaled from the air contaminated by rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. Symptoms can be quite severe and include fever, extreme fatigue, muscle aches, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and shortness of breath. Typically, these symptoms appear between two to four weeks after exposure, but they can also show up more than a month later. That’s why the quarantine period for the passengers was extended, to ensure everyone’s safety.
Those passengers who weren’t medically evacuated disembarked in Tenerife, Spain, back in May before returning home. It’s worth mentioning that surviving hantavirus can be a harrowing experience; one survivor described the illness as “hell on earth.” The journey of this outbreak has raised many questions about hantavirus, and the WHO has been proactive in providing answers and information to the public.
