Firefighters were met with a scene they had never seen before as a worried-looking flight crew rushed to the back of the plane. Smoke billowed out, and distressed passengers began to emerge, making it clear that something had gone terribly wrong. A passenger had been using a battery pack during the flight, which overheated and ultimately burst into flames, igniting a nearby seat. According to Ben Wodecki, who witnessed the incident, the flight crew quickly dropped the flaming device into a container of water. The plane then landed “fast and aggressively,” a response that reflects the growing urgency within the aviation industry regarding lithium-ion batteries.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has indicated that the airline industry is increasingly concerned about lithium-ion batteries. A recent study from the U.S. revealed that the industry encounters around two incidents related to lithium-ion batteries worldwide each week. These incidents can vary significantly, from passengers suddenly realizing their devices have malfunctioned to more severe outcomes, like the one Wodecki witnessed. CAA’s Nicholson pointed out that the rise in these incidents correlates with the growing number of passengers, flights, and devices brought onboard.

The National Physical Laboratory has noted that while mobile phones, power banks, tablets, and laptops are the most commonly used portable devices on flights, other gadgets like smartwatches and vapes are becoming increasingly prevalent. Nicholson explained, “The lithium itself doesn’t burn; it’s actually the organic materials and plastics that catch fire.” This is a stark reminder that even though lithium-ion technology has become commonplace, its risks are still very real.

The hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries first gained public attention about a decade ago due to a string of phone-related fires. Kubiak remarked that many of these incidents were attributable to design flaws, but manufacturers have since made strides to address safety concerns. South Korea is a leading player in this field, yet controlling the influx of cheaply made battery packs from East Asia remains a significant challenge. The quality control of these products can be questionable, leading to increased safety risks.

“Price is everything,” Nicholson stated, emphasizing the dilemma faced by airlines and manufacturers. Some airlines have started using specialized containment devices to mitigate risks, but this only underscores the importance of keeping devices in the cabin rather than in overhead compartments or checked baggage. Nicholson also mentioned that passengers generally seem to accept these warnings and restrictions, yet many remain unaware of how many devices rely on lithium-ion technology.

Currently, there are no economically viable alternatives to lithium-ion technology, according to Kubiak. The tech and personal device industries have heavily invested in this technology, with sodium-ion batteries being one possible alternative. However, Kubiak noted that sodium-ion technology is currently double the cost of lithium-ion devices for consumers. “It’s not just a technical solution; it’s also a societal solution we need to consider,” he added.

With the number of incidents on the rise and no immediate alternatives in sight, the aviation industry faces a pressing challenge. How will they ensure the safety of passengers while navigating these technological risks? It’s a question that will surely loom over future flights as both manufacturers and airlines work to find effective solutions.
