The OECD has pointed out that government subsidies play a significant role in fueling this global overcapacity. Most of the growth in steelmaking capacity over the past twenty years has occurred outside of OECD countries, frequently backed by state support.

In a striking revelation, the OECD reported that in 2024, the typical Chinese steel firm received subsidies that were 15 times greater than what producers in other countries received, relative to their total assets. This is a staggering figure that underscores the disparity in support among steelmakers globally. At the same time, Chinese steelmakers exported a record-breaking 131 million tonnes of steel in 2025, marking a 153% increase compared to 2020. This volume far exceeds what the European Union can manage, raising eyebrows and concerns among European producers.

The OECD emphasizes the urgent need to address the root causes of this issue, particularly harmful subsidies and other non-market practices. It’s clear that stronger international cooperation is essential to create a fair playing field for steel producers everywhere. European steelmakers, for instance, face higher labor and energy costs and stricter environmental regulations than many of their international counterparts. This leaves them in a precarious position, often unable to withstand prolonged periods of low prices, unlike rivals who benefit from lower operational costs and more substantial government backing.

Sir Keir Starmer has accused tech billionaire Elon Musk of “trying to whip up division” regarding the murder of Henry Nowak. This claim comes in the wake of violent protests in Southampton after the release of bodycam footage showing police handcuffing the 18-year-old Nowak as he lay dying. His assailant, Vickrum Digwa, had previously asserted that he was a victim of a racist attack. Nowak’s tragic final moments have ignited a political storm in the UK, with Musk criticizing the treatment of the teenager by the police.

Just to give you the lay of the land, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has already met with Nowak’s family on Thursday and emphasized the need for cooperation across political lines to rebuild trust in the police. Starmer is set to meet the family later as well. On Tuesday, Musk took to X, stating: “Send the video to everyone you know showing how heinously Nowak was treated by the police in his dying moments and how the police cravenly kowtowed to his murderer.” He also mentioned that mainstream media, who had extensively covered the George Floyd case, were suspiciously silent about Nowak’s situation.

Now, if you remember, George Floyd’s tragic death sparked worldwide protests against racism and police brutality, making this comparison particularly poignant. In a visit to York, Starmer didn’t hold back, accusing Musk of meddling in British politics. He stressed that the grieving family had called for calm and that the British people are generally reasonable and tolerant. “When we have a terrible case like Henry’s, we react calmly, as his family has done,” he said.

On the same day, Badenoch shared on X that she had met with Nowak’s parents and stepmother, praising their bravery. She echoed their plea for political leaders to work together to restore trust in the police, saying, “That trust has been broken because of what happened, and I agree with them on that.” She also pointed out that we need to carefully examine religious practices that allow the carrying of dangerous weapons in public, along with other activities detrimental to public safety.

Digwa, the man responsible for Nowak’s death, was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 21 years. After the verdict on Monday, Nowak’s father, Mark, made a heartfelt plea outside the court: “We do not want his death to be used to create further division, hatred or tension. We want his story to make our streets safer for everyone.”

Starmer noted that the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating the officers’ actions, and the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) is reviewing its guidelines concerning race due to this case. When asked if he supported the Conservatives’ call for a full misconduct investigation into the police officers involved, Starmer stated, “I think it’s right that there may need to be changes… But how we conduct ourselves now as politicians is really important.”

During the Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, tempers flared as Starmer accused Nigel Farage of exploiting Nowak’s death. Farage suggested that the public should respond with “pure, cold rage,” which didn’t sit well with many. In the Commons, Farage faced heckling from opposition MPs demanding he denounce the protests in Southampton while reiterating his claims that anti-racism policies led to differential treatment of ethnic groups by police.

Starmer, clearly frustrated, pointed out that a grieving family had asked for restraint and not for their tragedy to be used to fuel societal division. “Exploiting this tragedy to create grievance and division would be wrong in any circumstances,” he emphasized. “But to do it when the family are expressly saying ‘please don’t’ is unforgivable.”

The situation is tense, and with the police watchdog investigating the case, it raises questions about the future of policing and community relations in the UK. Will this tragic incident lead to meaningful change, or will it just add fuel to the fire of division?
