The latest figures on the EU economy show a shifting landscape, especially among the major players. As of 2025, the so-called ‘Big Four’ – Germany, France, Italy, and Spain – together account for a whopping 61% of the EU’s GDP. But here’s the kicker: their share has been on a downward trend for years. Back in 2005, these four giants held a commanding 67.9% of the EU’s GDP, which dropped to 65.3% just ten years later in 2015, and is now projected at 61% for 2025, according to Eurostat. So, what’s going on, huh? Which countries are stepping up their game, and which ones are falling behind?

Germany is still the heavyweight champion, contributing 24.1% of the EU’s GDP in 2025. To put this in perspective, the total GDP of the EU is a staggering €18.8 trillion, with Germany alone raking in about €4.5 trillion. That’s no small change! France follows as the second-largest economy at 15.9%, with Italy trailing behind at 12%. Spain, on the other hand, is hanging in there with a share in the single digits, around 9%. Together, these four countries dominate the EU economy. The Netherlands rounds out the top five with a modest 6.2% share, but all the other EU nations combine to hold less than 5% each. Poland is right on the cusp at 4.9%.

As we dive deeper, we see Belgium holding onto 3.4% of the pie, while Sweden and Ireland each have 3.2%. Austria, Denmark, and Romania are also in the mix, with GDP shares of 2.7%, 2.2%, and 2% respectively. Now here’s where it gets interesting: a staggering fifteen EU countries have GDP shares below 2%, collectively producing only 11.2% of the EU economy! Czechia, Portugal, Finland, Greece, and Hungary are still above the 1% mark, but not by much. Malta, Cyprus, Latvia, and Estonia are at the bottom of the barrel, with GDP shares as low as 0.1% in Malta. Can you believe that?

Over the last two decades, the shifts in GDP shares have been dramatic, with Italy and France taking the biggest hits. Italy’s share has plummeted from 15.6% in 2005 to just 12% in 2025—a decline of 3.6 percentage points. France isn’t far behind, dropping from 18.4% to 15.9%, a 2.5-point slide. Spain and Greece also saw declines of 0.7 points, but the impact is more pronounced in Greece, where the share fell from 2% to 1.3%. Meanwhile, Germany only saw a slight dip of 0.1 points over the two decades.

On the flip side, Poland has been the star performer, with its GDP share skyrocketing from 2.6% in 2005 to 4.9% in 2025, marking a remarkable 2.3-point increase. Ireland and Romania also made strides, each gaining over 1 percentage point. Even smaller economies like Czechia and Bulgaria saw positive movement, with shares increasing from 1.2% to 1.8% and from 0.3% to 0.6%, respectively. Talk about a comeback!

In the last decade alone, between 2015 and 2025, the trends continued. France’s share took a hit of 2 points, while Italy fell by 1.5 points. Germany’s piece of the EU pie also shrank by 1 point, from 25.1% to 24.1%. But Poland? It kept on climbing, recording the highest growth of 1.4 points during that period. So, the Polish economy is clearly on an upward trajectory, gaining a more significant slice of the EU economy.

But hold on, GDP figures don’t tell the whole story. They don’t account for population size, and they can be misleading when we think about living standards across the EU. GDP mainly reflects the size of a country’s economy but doesn’t show the variation in GDP per capita. To compare countries more accurately, we often look at GDP per capita in purchasing power standards (PPS), which considers the difference in living costs across Europe. Plus, let’s not forget the significant disparities in average wages across the continent.

With all these changes on the horizon, one has to wonder: what does the future hold for these economies? Will the Big Four continue to lose ground, or will new players rise to the occasion? We’re definitely keeping an eye on this evolving economic landscape…
