It wasn’t until she hit her mid-50s that terrifying nightmares began to plague her, robbing her of sleep and leaving her mentally drained. It was at this breaking point that she realized she needed help and was referred to mental health services.
When Caroline finally sought help, the psychiatrist she saw dismissed the idea that her symptoms were linked to her abuse, citing the time that had passed and her ability to raise a family and have a successful career as evidence. Instead, she was diagnosed with anxiety and prescribed anti-psychotic medication. “I didn’t understand what was happening to me, and I still don’t,” Caroline lamented.
It was only after securing private therapy with a specialist in childhood trauma that Caroline began to see a glimmer of hope. Over the following years, she gradually improved, but the journey was far from easy.
