That’s a whopping €4,727 on average across 38 European countries!

Besides Spain, several other countries are feeling the pinch, with baby essentials topping €6,000 in the Netherlands (€6,140), Finland (€6,066), Sweden (€6,025), and Switzerland (€6,018). Just think about that… that’s more than some people make in a year! Costs for baby gear also hover between €5,000 and €6,000 in places like Luxembourg (€5,665), Italy (€5,609), and Portugal (€5,337). It’s wild, right?
Now, the UK, on the other hand, is the shining example of affordability with just €2,813 needed for essentials. It’s like a breath of fresh air in contrast to the soaring prices in countries like Spain. Germany (€4,701) and France (€4,393) are more in line with the European average, while parents in Czechia (€3,211), Romania (€3,385), and Latvia (€3,392) are among those enjoying lower costs, all under €4,000. Turkey, at €4,023, also finds itself close to that threshold.
When we look at what’s eating up these costs, clothing takes the cake at 30.3%, followed closely by baby formula at 25.7% and nappies at 24.5%. Altogether, these three categories make up a staggering 81% of first-year expenses. For instance, parents are splurging an average of €1,465 on clothing alone, while baby formula and nappies cost around €1,187 and €1,152, respectively. It really adds up, doesn’t it?
But here’s the kicker: what’s considered “affordable” can vary significantly when you factor in average wages. Across the 36 countries examined, baby expenses gobble up about 20.9% of annual wages on average. If we zoom in, it’s a whole different story: in Belgium, it’s only 5.4%, while Moldovans are coughing up a staggering 88.8%! Can you believe that?
In places like Albania (66%), Turkey (45.1%), and Montenegro (45%), parents are spending a hefty chunk of their salaries on baby essentials, often over a third of their annual wages. Meanwhile, in wealthy nations like Luxembourg (6%) and Denmark (6.7%), the costs barely scratch the surface of their incomes.
And let’s not forget about nursery and crèche costs, which can be another financial burden. For example, in Switzerland, that can reach up to a jaw-dropping €64,211 for two children! Even in the Netherlands, where the fees are among the highest in the EU at €39,229, it’s a significant amount. In stark contrast, Germany’s costs are surprisingly low at just €552!
Now, when it comes to net childcare costs, single-earner families in Switzerland might pay around €10,200, while two-income couples might fork out €27,551. However, in some countries, government assistance can lower those costs dramatically, even bringing them under €5,000. It’s a game-changer for many families, trust me.
