People in England needing immediate care for mental health problems will soon find specialist walk-in hubs closer to home, as the government rolls out an ambitious plan. Ministers have laid out a roadmap to establish nearly 200 community mental health centres and mental health A&Es by 2029. The aim? To provide those in the midst of a mental health crisis or significant distress with accessible support, with dozens of these centres popping up in familiar high street locations like banks and libraries. You’ve got to understand, one in five individuals faces mental health struggles, and many turn up at A&E when they reach a breaking point simply because they can’t find help anywhere else.
The government believes that this plan, which builds on successful pilot projects from recent years, can really tackle this pressing issue and ensure that people receive the expert care they desperately need. They’re talking about 100 new community mental health centres being opened in various locations, from libraries to banks. Some will even be set up in brand new buildings! These centres will bring together existing teams of nurses, therapists, and support workers, creating a robust support network. And get this – many of these hubs are expected to be open seven days a week, with some even offering short-stay bed facilities.
Since 2024, six areas have been trialling this approach, and now the government is pledging to establish another 59 dedicated mental health A&Es, in addition to the 23 that are already operational. Can you imagine? These will often be linked to existing A&Es, making it easier for folks to get the help they need. Prime Minister Andy Burnham emphasized just how vital these new centres will be, saying, “These new centres will be a lifeline for so many.”
Health Secretary Yvette Cooper also chimed in, reassuring that while it may take some time for every area to catch up, having 100 centres across the country will truly make a difference in getting people early mental health support. She mentioned that the government has already ramped up mental health staffing, but there’s still a long way to go. Andy Bell, the chief executive of the Centre for Mental Health, welcomed the announcement but raised concerns that mental health emergency departments haven’t been properly tested yet. He noted the importance of having dedicated hubs for children and young people, who will also benefit from these services.
