Since then, wholesale energy prices have shot up, especially following the outbreak of the war in Iran back in February. Energy consultancy Cornwall Insight has forecasted that actual bills will depend on individual energy consumption and payment methods. Additionally, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, combined with heatwaves sweeping across Europe, has ramped up demand for energy—especially for air conditioning and cooling systems.
The price increases are set to overshadow the impact of Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s income policies, health initiatives, and energy consumption strategies. The proposed discount scheme could deliver targeted and adjustable support, responding dynamically to changing needs and price levels. The body behind this proposal estimates a cost of £1.9 billion for the new scheme—almost double what the current program costs—but it could potentially provide £450 in support to certain households.
Energy UK has suggested that this new support scheme could either be part-funded through consumer bills or entirely covered by taxpayer money via government funding. It’s worth noting that the last time the price cap peaked at a similar level was back in July 2023, according to Cornwall Insight, which still fell short of the highs hit the previous year following Russia’s aggressive maneuvers.
