Its unique design, inspired by the sails of traditional dhow boats, reflects Qatar’s rich maritime history. Fast forward four years, the football pitch has vanished, and the stadium has morphed into a fully enclosed basketball arena.
A lot of the original structure remains intact, including the main concourse and the hospitality areas, but new seating has been added around the court, and the retractable roof has been enclosed. A massive video screen now dominates the center court, ready to bring all the action to life. For the event organizers, this transformation is a clear demonstration of how infrastructure developed for the 2022 FIFA World Cup can be adapted for other major sporting events. “So this is the legacy that Qatar is always talking about,” said Rouda Al Ghanim, the Director of Communication for the Qatar 2027 Local Organising Committee, in an interview with Euronews. “Turning some infrastructure and some facilities and venues from one tournament to another tournament and making use of that is sustainable. It’s unique,” Al Ghanim added.

Qatar is set to host China next Thursday in an Asian qualifier, which conveniently falls exactly one year before the Basketball World Cup kicks off.
