The Spectrum launcher, developed by the German company Isar Aerospace, has made history by successfully lifting off from the Andøya spaceport in Norway and placing its payload into low Earth orbit. This significant achievement marks the rocket’s second flight, with the first attempt in 2025 ending in disappointment as it only cleared the launch pad for a mere 30 seconds before crashing into the sea. Now, the Spectrum stands tall at 28 meters and measures 2 meters in diameter, powered by a total of ten engines—nine on the first stage and one on the second. It’s designed to carry payloads of up to 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit (LEO).
Unlike the first flight that carried no passengers, this mission—aptly named “Onward and Upward”—included six commercial and educational payloads. Among these were several CubeSats and an experiment aimed at testing new technologies in space, providing European students with practical, hands-on experience. The Director General of the European Space Agency, Josef Aschbacher, hailed the launch as historic, noting that it is the first time a European competitor in the launcher sector has successfully reached orbit. He emphasized that Isar Aerospace, founded just eight years ago, has taken a significant step towards fostering a more diverse and autonomous European space sector.
This mission was backed by ESA’s Boost! programme, which finances commercial space transport initiatives. Isar Aerospace had previously received support through the agency’s Business Incubation Centre and came out on top in the first Microlauncher Competition organized by the German Space Agency (DLR), a contest that helped determine the selection of the payloads for this flight. In 2025, Isar Aerospace was chosen, alongside other companies, to participate in the European Launcher Challenge, a program that requires providers to achieve an orbital launch before 2027. With this successful flight, the company has become the first to hit that crucial milestone of the program.
Géraldine Naja, ESA’s Director of Space Transportation, highlighted that this is the first European company to reach orbit with its own launch vehicle. She congratulated the teams involved and hinted at the expectation of seeing more launches from Andøya in the near future. Isar Aerospace’s success comes at a time when Europe’s microlauncher ecosystem is gaining strong momentum, with companies like Spain’s PLD Space also beginning to secure contracts under the same European Launcher Challenge.
In a significant move to bolster this momentum, at the end of August, ESA signed a contract worth 158.9 million euros with the Alicante-based company to increase the launch rate of its MIURA 5 rocket. This initiative aims to reduce Europe’s reliance on foreign launchers for putting satellites into orbit.
