Jaded London, a trendy fashion brand, has found itself in hot water after the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled against one of its advertisements for allegedly glamorizing smoking. The ad featured a model with a cigarette, and according to the ASA, it breached rules that prohibit presenting smoking in an appealing manner. The ASA’s decision came after a complaint was filed, leading to an investigation that scrutinized the content of the ad and its potential influence on young viewers.

The brand argued that the cigarette was not the primary focus of the advertisement, which was heavily stylized to showcase the model in a fashionable and attractive light. However, the ASA pointed out that smoking should not be condoned or encouraged in any marketing materials, especially given the UK’s strict regulations about tobacco advertising. The ruling stated that the portrayal of smoking in this context was inappropriate and could mislead viewers into believing that smoking is a glamorous activity.

Founded in 2013 by siblings Jade Camber and Grant Goulden, Jaded London has rapidly gained popularity, especially among the youth, amassing a whopping 1.5 million followers on Instagram. Their fashionable clothing is not just limited to their online store; you can find their pieces in major retailers like Selfridges and Urban Outfitters. The brand reported impressive sales figures, raking in £51 million in revenue for the year ending June 2025.

In response to the ASA’s ruling, Jaded London maintained that the cigarette in question “did not appear to be lit” and insisted that the focus was on their clothing and accessories. They acknowledged the concerns raised and stated they would refrain from using similar smoking imagery in future advertisements. The ASA has mandated that the brand discontinue the use of the controversial ad, highlighting the ongoing battle against smoking promotion in media targeted at younger audiences.

As we know, smoking has been banned for individuals born after 2008 in the UK, and the government is tightening regulations on advertising, especially concerning junk food and vaping products. The ASA’s recent decisions reflect a broader trend toward protecting children from harmful influences in advertising, a point that Jaded London seems to be taking seriously moving forward.

With the brand now under scrutiny, many are left wondering how this will impact their future marketing strategies. Will they pivot entirely away from any imagery that could be perceived as promoting smoking? Only time will tell…
