According to an analysis by Dubai-based investment firm One Investments, the top nine airlines collectively raked in a staggering $25.11 billion (€22 billion) in net earnings. Leading the charge for the second year in a row is Emirates, which reported a jaw-dropping $5.4 billion (€4.7 billion) net profit for the first quarter of this year. That’s the best performance in its history. However, things may not be as rosy as they seem, especially with the shadow of war in Iran creeping back into the picture.

The airline’s strong showing came despite carrying 1% fewer passengers, a direct consequence of the ongoing conflict that has sent shockwaves through the region’s aviation landscape. The International Air Transport Association is sounding alarms, warning that global airline profits are on track to halve this year. That’s no small potatoes! Just to put that into perspective, oil prices have already surged above $150 a barrel due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil supply.
And while Ryanair seems to have played its cards right by hedging 80% of its fuel needs at around $67 a barrel, they are still keeping their cards close to their chest for the year ahead, citing “poor visibility.” Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines, despite posting a record operating profit, saw its net earnings drop nearly 10% because of the ongoing conflict shutting down Qatari airspace in its final quarter. CEO Hamad Al-Khater expressed concern about the impacts of these events on their bottom line.
