As the back-to-school season approaches, Greek families are gearing up for the familiar budgeting exercise that comes with ensuring their children have everything they need for the new academic year. The hustle and bustle in bookshops and stores selling school supplies has already begun, with parents on the lookout for exercise books, stationery, art materials, and all the necessary gear for their little scholars.
Prices for basic school products are, generally speaking, quite similar to last year’s figures. The Consumers Association of Greece, EEKE, recently released specific price data for a range of essential school supplies based on a sample survey of various supermarket chains. For instance, in 2025, a two-subject spiral notebook measuring 17x24cm was priced at €1.64, while an A4 two-subject version cost €2.55. Meanwhile, a set of 12 fine washable felt-tip pens came in at €1.99, and another set of 12 felt-tip pens was priced at €1.89.
And it doesn’t stop there—parents will also fork out €1.49 for a pack of five pencils, €1.29 for four pens, and €1.49 for a compass with a pencil. If you’re looking to pick up a sharpener and an eraser, that’ll set you back just €0.99. You can grab a 20-centimetre ruler for a mere €0.36, while a pack of 12 coloured pencils will cost you €2.85.
Now, these numbers might not line up perfectly with every product on the shelves this year since variations in brand, packaging, dimensions, or point of sale can affect pricing. However, they do paint a picture of what basic school supplies were going for back in 2025. Oh, and it’s also crucial to mention that on August 28, 2025, the Ministry of Development announced, following a sit-down with the Hellenic Supermarkets Association, that companies had committed to keeping the prices of school supplies at their 2024 levels.
But hold on a second! The ministry’s official announcement didn’t provide detailed prices for each product code, which leaves a bit of a gap in transparency. Fast forward to now, and it looks like in many categories, the lowest prices are still holding steady at relatively affordable levels. However, the gap between budget-friendly options and pricier alternatives is wide, meaning that the final bill can easily shoot up.
For families with two or more school-age children, even slight differences in the price of each item can add up quickly—transforming what should be a simple shopping trip into a hefty expense for the household budget. Yani, bu işin sonu pek iyi görünmüyor… Bakalım, önümüzdeki haftalarda neler olacak?
