He told the Sunday Telegraph that he’d be keeping a close eye on any indication that the public was being “taken for a ride at the pump or the tills.” However, the British Retail Consortium countered this by saying that competition among supermarkets has kept prices as low as possible, rather than any government intervention. They suggested many of the increased costs came from higher National Insurance contributions, increased packaging taxes, and outdated business rates.
